Safe Shopping Online (it's safer than you think!)

Everything you need to know about shopping safely online- here at MakerGeeks.com or anywhere you shop online!

Note: Did you know that most telephone orders from Fortune 500 Companies are actually entered over the internet? That's right, when you call some Fortune 500 Company (a billion $$ plus company) in the retail industry and give your credit card over the phone that info is processed over the same internet you are on right now. Most companies use call centers that are thousands of miles away from their main office- this means that all that info you just gave to the friendly customer service rep is now being transmitted just as if you had placed an order on their own web-site. So, whether you place the order yourself or have someone else place that order you are still doing business online.

Note: What about when I buy something from physical store? When you go into a store and buy something they swipe your card through that little machine and we don't think much of it. However, that little machine is just a computer that is connecting to the internet to charge your card. Once again you are shopping online!

Shopping Cart Security:

All transactions at MakerGeeks.com take place over 100% secure, SSL server. Once you are taken to the payment info page of our shopping cart, you will notice the LOCK or KEY in your browser, indicating that the transaction is being done over a secure server.

Look for SSL Use

  • Many online transactions are now protected by what's called SSL, which is short for Secure Sockets Layer.
  • SSL provides you with sound privacy protection by encrypting the channel of communication between you and the consumer. Using a mathematical formula, SSL puts the information you exchange into a complex code. Think of it as a kind of armor over the information. Even if intercepted, your data would be extremely difficult to read.
  • In plain English, SSL helps the consumer's browser automatically scramble his information—such as a credit card number—before it gets sent to the merchant. After that, SSL allows only the merchant's software to unscramble this data. Through SSL, you and your customers can complete transactions with the confidence that no one else can read, change, or fool with their payment information as it travels over the Internet.
  • Since the data sent is secure, SSL is now considered more than enough security for consumers to do business with merchants they know and trust.
  • To find out if your transaction is guarded by SSL, look for the picture of the unbroken key or closed lock in your browser window (both the Netscape Navigator/Communicator and Microsoft Internet
  • Explorer browsers use SSL). Either indicator means SSL is hard at work. (If you don't see either one, or if you see a broken key or an open lock, that means SSL is definitely not hard at work protecting your transaction.)
  • The easy way you can tell if SSL is guarding your transaction, though, is to check the URL of the site you are visiting. It should change from "http" to "https" when processing secure transactions.

Am I liable if there are charges that I didn't authorize on my credit card?

Most credit card companies have toll-free numbers and 24-hour service to deal with these emergencies -- they are eager to avoid credit card fraud. (Below is an up to date list of Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card and American Express Card's personal security statements and info about what to do if you have unauthorized activity on your card.

According to US law, (this law works whether you are buying 3D Printers, 3D filament or a new house with your credit card) Once you have reported the loss or theft of your credit card, you have no more responsibility for unauthorized charges. Further, your maximum liability under federal US law is $50 per credit card -- and most credit card issuers will even waive that fee for good customers (see below list).

In plain English that means that if you see a charge on your card that you don't recognize then all you have to do is call your credit card company and inform them of the problem and they will issue a reversal immediately. You aren't liable for that charge anymore! So shopping online is very safe... but if the unthinkable happens you still aren't out any money!

How to Purchase Items

Add your items to the shopping cart

Whenever you’re browsing our site, there is a virtual shopping cart at your disposal to hold your purchases. When you find an item you want to purchase, from the product’s detail page click the orange ‘Add To Shopping Cart’ button. Every time you add something to your cart, you will be taken to a page with an itemized list of what’s in your shopping cart.

To remove an item from your cart, simply change the quantity of the desired item to 0 and then press the “Update Qty.” button near the bottom of the shopping cart and it will be “put back on the shelf”.

Once you’ve added something to your shopping cart, it remains unless you remove it by clicking on the trash can icon, even if you hit the ‘back’ button on your web browser.

To shop more, click the button below the itemized list of products that reads ‘Continue Shopping’ and you’ll return to the home page of our site. If at anytime you wish to view the contents of your shopping cart in detail, click on the 'Shopping Cart/Checkout' on the top right hand side of the page.

Check out

If you are done shopping and want to purchase your stuff, from the shopping cart page click the orange button on the right hand side of the page labeled ‘Proceed to Checkout’. If you are NOT on the shopping cart page, and are just browsing the store, you can proceed right to checkout by clicking the 'Shopping Cart/Checkout' on the top right hand side of the page.

First you will need to click on the blue button 'Check Out' at the bottom of the page.

The next step will be to indicate your credit card information under ‘Payment Method’. At this point, you will also have the option to change your preference for shipping and to edit your shipping and billing addresses. When you’re done entering all the correct info and ready to pay, click ‘Continue’ to review your order.

The next and final step will be to review your order and then hit the 'Send Order' button, anytime up till you hit the 'Send Order' button you can still change your order or payment method without a charge. Once you hit the 'Send Order' your order will be processed.

Your receipt

After you click ‘Send Order', your receipt will appear on the screen. We also email you a copy to the email address you provide.

Payment Options

MakerGeeks.com accepts: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, BitCoin and Purchase Orders from qualified labs and schools in the USA.

Will I have to pay Sales Tax?

Only Missouri residents will have to pay sales tax, all other states will have no tax added to your purchase.

I see two charges on my card, what happened?

I apologize about that however; we haven’t taken money twice from your charge card for this transaction. The second charge you see is an authorization done at the time you place your order. These authorizations are done automatically when you placed the order, to make sure the card is valid. A hotel or restaurant would do the same make sure the card is valid and not stolen or out of date.

Credit cards will usually remove to charge in 24-48 hours however, some charge cards and debit cards can hold the authorization for up to 2 weeks. If you call your bank they can explain it much better than we can. If your billing statement happened to close and be sent to you while the authorization was on the card the paper statement will show this as a charge however, if you call your bank or credit card company they will be able to help you and show that the charge is no longer on the card as it was only an authorization.

How Do I Change The Products That I Ordered?

If you ordered the wrong product or if you would like to delete or add a product, the best idea is to e-mail our customer service at joshua@makergeeks.com as soon so possible.

NOTE: In many cases orders will go to processing just minutes after placing the order so it may be to late to change the order even if you e-mail us right after you place the order. However, we will do our best to get the order changed or help you exchange the items for what you meant to order.

NOTE: If you have made your payment via Bitcoin's no change or cancellation or refunds can be given for ANY reason due to the nature of Bitcoins once we receive your payment to our CoinBase account the order will be processed and shipped - if the order is for a custom job or for a 3D Printer the order can not be canceled or refunded for any reason to your BitCoin account once you have sent payment to our CoinBase account.

How do I get my filament to stick and STAY stuck?

This one is a multi-faceted answer but here are the basics:

  1. Your print bed has to be level!! I mean, spend some time on this one... if it isn't level like a... well... like something that's really level - then your print won't stick and it won't come out looking right.
  2. Next... CLEAN, CLEAN, then RE CLEAN, have a sandwich and a soda-pop and then CLEAN again... use acetone and a lint free towel to make sure your print surface is clean and free from oils and dirt.
  3. If you are having a hard time printing on glass try using some Kapton tape as that will give you a little better stick
  4. If you have a heated print surface... TURN IT ON!! Even when the filament used might not call for it, I always turn on my heat bed (who doesn't like a warm bed!!); even if it's just 40c it will really help. For PLA normally you'll want about 60c and for ABS you'll want 110c
  5. For ABS 3D Printing room temperature really matters... you need to keep your entire build warm; so if you can't print out in a warm room try putting a box over the printer to keep that build area as warm as possible.
  6. Try making "ABS Juice" - just add some scrap ABS filament to a bottle of acetone and let it dissolve and then use that to clean your print surface as normal; the dissolved ABS will give your printer extra STICK OR you can use "Aqua-Net Super Hold" hair spray (must be this brand to work right)... just clean your board as always and then lightly spray the Aqua-Net on the print board and print away (this method is my favorite as it seems to work best for me!)
  7. KEEP trying!! You'll get it and once you do have it dialed in then you have it forever... each printer is different; make sure you make notes of what works and what doesn't for each filament you use and each printer you have. So, in the future when you want to print out that EPIC "Yogi Bear" figurine in MakerGeeks.com Blue you know what to set up your GCODE for.

What is the main differences between PLA and ABS 3D Printer Filament?

The main difference between PLA filament and ABS filament is that ABS is produced from fossil fuels and PLA is derived from biological resources, which makes PLA plastic biodegradable. When it comes to 3D printing the key differences between ABS and PLA are:

  • PLA is a rigid liquid and ABS is a crystallized liquid, meaning that when heated ABS transits slowly from a gel to liquid and PLA transits direct from solid to liquid.
  • ABS is more flexible and PLA is more solid, meaning when stressed PLA will snap sooner.
  • PLA is more glossy looking consumable than ABS (see photos when selecting your material).

Wow, you have a 1kg spool of filament... SO What! How much actual filament is that??

Big question of the day is... how long is a spool of 3D Printing Filament!? Hummmmm, I think even Blinky the wise old MakerGeeks.com owl might have a hard time with that question but never fear... we have the answer!!

1/kg Spool

PLA 1.75mm

PLA 3mm

ABS 1.75mm

ABS 3mm

302,000.00mm

120,192.30mm

245,000.00mm

147,732.30mm

... and what does that mean to me and you!! Well, check this out... if you are printing with 3.00mm filament for a iPhone case you need about 2,700mm of filament; for a EPIC Starship Enterprize Model you'll need about 12,000mm of 3D Filament and for a full Kossel 3D Printer Kit we normally use about 50,000mm of filament. Another way to look at it according to MakerBot is that 1 spool of 3D Filament produces about 392 full sized chess pieces. Whoa... that's a lot of chess!!

Don't forget... Print Happy @ MakerGeeks.com
Now, go tell 5 friends and 3 total strangers that MakerGeeks.com is beyond EPIC!!! (thank you)
